Pump Not Priming

Pump Not Priming?

Here are a few quick and simple things to check that may get your pool up and running or performing at its best:

  • Are the skimmer and pump baskets clean?
  • Was the pump primed with water before starting?
  • Was the filter bled of air through its air relief valve?
  • Is the pool water level high enough to flood the skimmers?
  • Does the pump lid gasket need replacement?
  • Are there unions with gaskets that may need replacement?
  • Are there valves that may need replacement?
  • Are all suction side pump fittings glued properly or need replacement?
  • Has the filter media been cleaned with a filter cleaning solution? Has the filter been cleaned properly? For most pools if the pressure is higher that 15 PSI it’s time to clean the media. (A filter cleaning solution must be used.) For most Hayward inground pool filters use a 3/4″ deep-socket wrench for belly-band clamp removal. Be sure to follow manufacturer directions for re-installing the clamp; NEVER rely on hand tightening for any filter.
  • Is the pump impeller and diffuser clear of debris?
  • Is the variable speed pump setting correct?

All suction drains must be protected by an approved cover.  If any drain cover becomes loose, broken or missing, close the pool immediately and contact an industry professional to make the necessary repairs.  All drain covers come with expiration dates embedded into the cover, and it is your responsibility to change the drain covers after they expire.  Never swim or play near drains (submerged suction fittings).  Your body may be trapped, causing permanent injury or drowning.  If you have any questions, contact a swimming pool professional.
